Mindanao State University (MSU) operates as a multi-campus system under a unified governing framework. While the overarching MSU System Code dictates general academic guidelines, individual campuses like MSU Marawi, MSU Naawan, and MSU Buug implement specific local regulations. This guide consolidates these academic standards, grading frameworks, and registrar rules to help you track your academic performance.

The Official MSU Grading System

Mindanao State University uses a numerical grading system where lower numbers represent superior performance. A grade of 1.00 is the highest achievable mark, while 5.00 represents a failing grade.

Grade Range Equivalence / Description Core Status
1.00 - 1.25 Excellent Passing
1.50 - 1.75 Very Good Passing
2.00 - 2.25 Good Passing
2.50 - 2.75 Satisfactory Passing
3.00 Passing Passing
5.00 Failure Failing
INC Incomplete Temporary

Remedial Policy Note:

Instructors may assign remedial tasks to students with computed raw averages of 70% to 74%. After evaluation, the final reported grade becomes either a passing 3.00 or a failing 5.00. The office of the registrar does not apply decimal rounding rules to raw grade calculations.

Latin Honors Requirements

MSU grants graduation honors based on the Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) calculated over the entire course of study. Different campuses maintain slight variations depending on whether they reference the legacy MSU Code of 1976 or the updated Student Handbook.

Latin Honor MSU Marawi Handbook CGPA MSU Code of 1976 CGPA
Summa Cum Laude 1.00 - 1.20 1.00 - 1.30
Magna Cum Laude 1.21 - 1.45 1.31 - 1.45
Cum Laude 1.46 - 1.75 1.46 - 1.75

Strict Academic Load Mandate:

To qualify for Latin honors, you must enroll in a minimum load of 15 units per semester, or the standard load your program curriculum prescribes. The university only permits exemptions under documented circumstances such as medical problems, a lack of available course offerings, or verified employment obligations.

Honor Roll Lists & Awards

To recognize outstanding term performance, MSU campuses maintain semestral honor lists. Regular students can qualify for these distinctions based on their GPA during a single semester.

MSU Marawi Distinctions

  • President's Lister: Requires a semestral GPA of 1.00. Awardees receive a certificate, a monthly stipend, and a cash reward.
  • Chancellor's Lister: Requires a semestral GPA of 1.25 or higher. Awardees receive a certificate and a monthly stipend.
  • Dean's Lister: Requires a semestral GPA of 1.75 or higher. Awardees receive a certificate.

MSU Naawan Distinctions

  • President's List: Awarded to students with a GPA of exactly 1.00.
  • Chancellor's List: Awarded to students with a GPA between 1.01 and 1.25.
  • Vice Chancellor's List: Awarded to students with a GPA between 1.26 and 1.50.
  • Dean's List: Awarded to students with a GPA between 1.51 and 1.75.

Strict Registrar Regulations & Policies

Failing to monitor policies on academic load, dropping deadlines, and incomplete marks can result in official actions. Keep track of these policies to maintain your enrollment status.

1. Underloading & Maximum Tenure

The registrar classifies any student carrying less than the full curricular credit load for a semester as an irregular student. If you fail at least one class, you face load restrictions. In the succeeding semester, you cannot enroll in more academic units than regular students of your program level carry.

Under MSU Naawan rules, the maximum residency limit to finish a 4-year degree is six years. For 5-year degrees, the limit is seven years. This standard does not apply to part-time students who enroll in 12 units or fewer per semester.

2. Failing Marks & Academic Dismissal

A grade of 5.00 represents a failed course. The registrar at the MSU Main Campus enforces strict academic performance limits to track progress:

  • 100% Failure Rate: If you fail all your enrolled units in a single semester, you face permanent disqualification from enrollment in any college or department within the university.
  • 75% Failure Rate: Failing more than 75% of your enrolled units results in dismissal from your college rolls.
  • 50% Failure Rate on Probation: A student on academic probation who fails more than half of their semester load is dropped from the college rolls.
  • Repeated Failures: Acquiring three separate failing grades across two consecutive semesters results in dismissal from the college rolls.

Core Retention Standards:

A single semester GPA lower than 2.50 or any grade below 2.25 triggers an official warning. Two warnings require you to shift majors. Failing any core subject or carrying a cumulative GPA lower than 3.00 across your first two years also triggers a mandatory change in program.

3. Course Dropping Rules

You can officially drop a class by submitting the prescribed form signed by your instructor, adviser, and college Dean. This must occur within the designated academic calendar window, usually starting after preliminary examinations.

  • Before Mid-Term: Authorized dropping yields a grade of "AW" (Authorized Withdrawal), which does not affect your GWA.
  • After Mid-Term: Dropping a class after the mid-term window closed leads to a failing mark of 5.00.
  • Late Dropping Threshold: At MSU Naawan, dropping a course after 75% of the total semester hours pass requires the instructor to evaluate your standing. If your performance is poor, you receive a 5.00.
  • Unauthorized Withdrawal: Abandoning your classes without filing official dropping paperwork leads to a loss of official school privileges and academic sanctions.

4. Managing Incomplete Requirements ("INC")

An "INC" mark indicates that you missed the final examination or failed to submit required coursework due to medical reasons or emergency situations.

  • One-Year Expiry: You must complete missing academic requirements or pass a removal examination within one academic year. Failure to resolve the mark within this period automatically converts the "INC" to a failing grade of 5.00.
  • Failure Condition: If your standing before the final exam was failing, missing the test yields an immediate grade of 5.00 instead of an "INC".
  • Graduation Block: Under MSU Buug Graduate School policies and undergraduate rules, you cannot graduate while carrying an unresolved incomplete mark on your academic record.
