How to Compute DOST GWA: The Ultimate Scholar's Grade Guide

The complete step-by-step tutorial on calculating your GWA for DOST scholarship requirements, excluding non-academic subjects, and maintaining eligibility.

Overview

As a scholar of the Department of Science and Technology - Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI), tracking your academic performance is critical to keeping your benefits. In this guide, we break down DOST's specific grading rules, subject exclusions, and how to verify your GWA standings without manual computation errors.

DOST Maintaining Grade Requirements

DOST scholars are required to maintain a specific General Weighted Average (GWA) per semester or term to retain eligibility. Under the official guidelines, scholars must hit a cumulative GWA of 2.50 or better (numerically lower or equal to 2.50 on the standard 1.0–5.0 scale, where 1.0 is highest and 5.0 is failing).

For universities utilizing alternative scales, such as a 4.0 scale (like De La Salle University or Ateneo de Manila University), the equivalent requirement is a GPA of 2.50 or better (higher is better).

Excluding PE and NSTP from the Calculation

A common error among students is including non-academic courses in their GWA calculations. According to the DOST Scholars' Handbook, Physical Education (PE) and National Service Training Program (NSTP) checked courses are completely excluded from the maintaining average. Including these can artificially inflate or deflate your standing.

Step-by-Step GWA Calculation Formula

To calculate your DOST-compliant average manually, use the following weighted average formula:

  1. Exclusions: Remove PE and NSTP rows from your grades list.
  2. Multiplication: Multiply the grade of each academic course by its units. This gives you the course grade points.
  3. Summation: Sum all the grade points together. Also sum all the academic units together.
  4. Division: Divide the sum of the grade points by the total academic units to determine your DOST GWA.
