What is the UST 9-Unit Rule?
Under the UST General Statutes, an undergraduate student who fails 9 or more academic units in a single semester is automatically placed on strict academic probation and subject to unit de-loading. Accumulating consecutive 9-unit failures or exceeding faculty-specific allowable failure thresholds results in academic debarment from the faculty/college.

- Academic Warning / De-loading: Failing 3 to 8 units restricts enrollment load in the succeeding term to allow retaking prerequisite courses.
- Academic Probation (9+ Units Failed): Maximum allowable load is reduced (often capped at 15–18 units), and the student must pass 100% of enrolled subjects in the probation semester.
- Debarment: Total failure percentage exceeding 50% of enrolled credits across two consecutive semesters. A debarred student cannot re-enroll in their current college but may apply for admission into another UST faculty (e.g., shifting to AB or Commerce) or transfer to another institution.
Steps to File an Academic Appeal at UST
- Secure your certified Transcript of Records (TOR) or semestral grade printout from MyUSTe portal.
- Draft a formal Letter of Appeal addressed to the College Dean, explaining any extenuating circumstances (health, family hardship) with supporting documents.
- Obtain an endorsement from your Department Chair or Academic Counselor.
- Submit the appeal package to the Office of the Dean prior to the regular enrollment period.
